cast iron patio furniture

Now you’re thinking about buying Cast Iron Patio Furniture. It may well be because of its style and grace but it may well also be because of it’s durability.

With a little regular care your investment will last for decades. Here are a few guide lines for looking after your Cast Iron Outdoor Furniture.

This routine should be carried out every spring. If however you live within 15 miles of the coast you may well need to increase the frequency as salt corrosion can cause a far more deterioration of  your furniture.

Firstly take some mild detergent (dish washing liquid is perfect) and mix with warm water. Soak a cleaning cloth in the soap mix and then wipe down all the surfaces of your furniture making sure to reach the undersides too.

Next take a garden hose and rinse off the soap solution thoroughly. Allow the furniture to dry now. It definitely speeds the process up if it’s a sunny day.

Using a medium grade sandpaper you can then lightly sand any areas of the furniture that are showing signs of rust and repaint those areas.

If your furniture has suffered from a few years of neglect and the rust cover is quite extensive you need not worry. It is a relatively simple task to restore it’s beauty. It is best to do this restoration work in a sheltered space out of the wind. The space does however need to be well ventilated.

If the rusting is still fairly superficial you will probably find that a wire brush is all you really need to remove it. Before you start disassemble the furniture. Remove any wooden slats. Once disassembled you will find it much easier to remove the rust from every part of the iron. It is important to treat every part. Rust will grow and spread quickly from any part left untreated. You may need a small wire brush to get into the more inaccessible nooks and crannies.

When you’ve finished the surface should feel smooth to the touch. Now take a garden hose and remove  all the dirt, rust and flaking paint that are coating the surface.

Once the surface is clean allow it to dry completely before painting.

Now using a good primer paint you should give the furniture at least three coats before switching to the finishing paint . Again to give lasting protection I would suggest another 3 coats.
